Presentation of ”Learning City for Creative Economy“ program at a roundtable discussion in Gomel

Date: 05 September 2017

The Gomel Branch of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a roundtable discussion, where ”Learning City for Creative Economy“ program was presented to the Gomel Region business representatives. The Institute for International Cooperation of the German Association of People's Universities with the support of the representative office of the registered company Deutscher Volkshochschul-Verband e.V. (FRG) implements the program on the territory of Belarus.

The objectives of "Learning City for Creative Economy“ program are: to increase the competencies of educational institutions and small business representatives interested in developing innovative products (services), and to involve them in implementing regional strategies for sustainable development; expansion of intersectoral cooperation; promotion of creative economy ideas and the ”learning city“ concept.

According to the definition by UNESCO, the learning city:

  • effectively mobilizes resources in each sector to promote inclusive education – from basic to higher education;
  • promotes vocational preparation and on-the-job training;
  • expands the use of modern educational technologies;
  • improves the quality of education;
  • promotes the culture of lifelong learning.

The program enables participating cities to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. At the moment, two Belarusian cities, Gomel and Vitebsk, have such an opportunity.

Acting as a partner in implementing the program, the Gomel Branch of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry sees the prospect of using this resource to promote entrepreneurship development in regional centers and rural areas by integrating education and training into all processes at the local level.

One of the upcoming events within the program is the ”Linen Carousel“ festival. It will take place in the town of Korma on September 30. The Gomel branch of the BelCCI acts as a co-organizer of the exhibition within the framework of the festival.
